Plant growth and development
Plant development starts at seed germination:
Seeds germination requires water and oxygen.
Seeds germination divided into two types as shown in the diagram below
Hypogeal = monocot
Epigeal = dicot
Following seed germination plant growth happened at the meristem cells at shoot and root regions.
Plant growth divided into two phases: primary growth and secondary growth.
Primary growth involve only the formation of new cells, elongation and specialisation of cells at the shoot and root regions.
Secondary growth involve the increase in diameter of the plant. This growth performed mainly by dicot or woody plants. Monocot or herbiscous plant may not have secondary growth.
